RootGuard Drip Line: Anti-Root Dripline with 10-Year Warranty
Share
Introduction
Root intrusion into drip emitters is one of the most persistent and costly problems in subsurface and surface drip irrigation, particularly for perennial crops, orchards, vineyards, and high-value horticultural production. Roots are naturally attracted to the moisture and nutrients at the dripper outlet, and once inside an emitter, they cause irreversible blockage that cannot be cleared by flushing or chemical treatment.
Until now, the only solutions were to use above-ground drip systems (which have their own limitations), apply herbicides around the root zone, or accept periodic dripper replacement as a maintenance cost. RootGuard Drip Line changes this entirely — it is the world's only drip line with integrated anti-root technology, backed by a 10-year anti-root warranty.

What Is the RootGuard Drip Line?
The RootGuard Drip Line is a 16mm reusable drip irrigation pipe manufactured by Caudal, a specialist Spanish irrigation manufacturer with a strong reputation for high-performance drip products. It incorporates a self-compensating flat dripper insert with a unique silicone membrane and a proprietary anti-root active ingredient embedded directly into the pipe material.
The anti-root technology works by slowly, gradually, and controllably releasing an active ingredient from the pipe wall that prevents roots from entering and clogging the drippers. Critically, this is not a herbicide — it does not harm the crop or surrounding soil biology. It simply deters root growth at the immediate vicinity of the emitter, protecting the dripper while leaving the broader root system unaffected.
Key Features and Technology
Anti-Root Protection
RootGuard is the only anti-root solution available in the market that is built into the pipe itself. The active ingredient is released slowly and uniformly along the entire length of the drip line, providing consistent protection at every emitter. The release is controlled to last the full warranty period without requiring any additional treatment or application.
- No herbicides required
- Guaranteed uniform dosing of the active ingredient
- 10-year anti-root warranty — the only drip line in the world to offer this
- Reduces shearing problems on irrigation laterals caused by root pressure
Pressure-Compensating Silicone Membrane Emitter
The RootGuard dripper uses a silicone membrane that flexes to maintain a precise, consistent flow rate across a wide range of operating pressures. This pressure-compensating (PC) design ensures uniform water and nutrient distribution along the full length of the lateral, regardless of pressure variation due to elevation changes or long pipe runs.
- Consistent flow rate across a wide pressure range
- Variation coefficient less than 5% — one of the most accurate integrated drip pipes on the market
- Complies with ISO 9261 international standard for drip irrigation emitters
Unique Sealing Ring
A unique sealing ring closes the entrance to the emitter between irrigation cycles, keeping the lateral pressurised and preventing soil particles, roots, and insects from entering the dripper when the system is not running. This is particularly valuable in subsurface drip applications where the emitter is in direct contact with the soil.
Self-Cleaning Mechanism and Clog-Proof Inlet Filter
The RootGuard emitter incorporates a self-cleaning mechanism and a reliable clog-proof inlet filter that work together to prevent blockage from particles in the irrigation water. Wide water passages throughout the labyrinth design ensure high agitation of dispersed particles, preventing settlement and blockage even with lower-quality water sources.
- Suitable for different types of water including reservoir water, reclaimed water, and surface water transfers
- High accuracy and performance without clogging
- Minimum coefficient of friction (Kd) thanks to the lightweight emitter design
Reusable and UV Resistant
Unlike single-season drip tape, the RootGuard Drip Line is designed for reuse across multiple seasons. Its excellent rewinding capacity makes it practical to recover, store, and re-lay in subsequent seasons, significantly reducing the cost per season compared to disposable drip tape.
- Excellent rewinding capacity for seasonal crops
- Suitable to be rewound and applied in the following season
- Resistant to UV rays for above-ground and surface applications
- 100% recyclable at end of life
- Manufactured from excellent raw materials for longer field performance and durability
- Resistant to agrochemicals including fertilisers and pH adjustment chemicals
Available Variants
The RootGuard Drip Line is available in three variants, all in 16mm diameter and supplied in 400-metre rolls:
- Pipe sizes - 16mm, 20mm,
- Flow Rates - 1.1 lph, 1.6lph, & 2.2lph
- 15cm emitter spacing — ideal for closely spaced crops with high water demand, such as vegetables and strawberries. The 15cm spacing ensures thorough wetting of the root zone in lighter soils.
- 20cm emitter spacing — a versatile option for a wide range of horticultural crops. The 20cm spacing suits medium-textured soils and crops with moderate water requirements.
- 25cm emitter spacing — the higher flow rate and wider spacing suit crops with larger root zones and higher water demand, or heavier soils where wider wetting patterns are achieved. Well suited to orchards, vineyards, and larger vegetable crops.

Ideal Applications
The RootGuard Drip Line is the optimal solution for high-value crops that require great precision in the application of water and nutrients, particularly where root intrusion is a known risk:
- Orchards and tree fruit — where tree roots actively seek out dripper moisture and subsurface installation is preferred for longevity
- Vineyards — where precise, targeted irrigation at the root zone is critical for fruit quality and vine health
- Soft fruit — strawberries, raspberries, and cane fruit where consistent, accurate irrigation drives yield and quality
- Protected horticulture — greenhouse and polytunnel crops where reusability and precision are priorities
- Vegetable production — where close emitter spacing and consistent flow rates support uniform crop establishment and growth
- Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) — where the pipe is buried and root intrusion risk is highest
Choosing the Right Variant
Selecting the right emitter spacing and flow rate depends on your soil type, crop water requirement, and row spacing:
- Light sandy soils — choose closer emitter spacing (15cm) to achieve adequate lateral wetting between emitters
- Medium loam soils — 20cm spacing typically provides good coverage
- Heavy clay soils — wider spacing (25cm) is usually sufficient as water spreads laterally more readily
- High water demand crops or hot climates — consider the 1.6 lph variant to deliver adequate volume within practical irrigation durations
- Precision nutrition programmes — the 1.1 lph variants allow longer, more frequent irrigation cycles that support continuous fertigation

System Design Considerations
The RootGuard Drip Line is a pressure-compensating product, which means it will deliver consistent flow rates across a wide pressure range — typically 0.5 to 4 bar. This makes it well suited to systems with elevation changes or long lateral runs where pressure variation would otherwise cause uneven distribution.
As with all drip systems, good filtration is essential. We recommend a minimum of 120 mesh (130 micron) filtration upstream of the drip line. Our Amiad Filters range includes disc and screen options suitable for protecting drip systems. Monitor system pressure with pressure gauges at the head of each zone to confirm correct operating conditions.
Conclusion
The RootGuard Drip Line is a genuinely innovative product that solves one of the most persistent problems in drip irrigation. Its combination of anti-root protection, pressure-compensating accuracy, self-cleaning emitters, reusability, and 10-year warranty makes it the premium choice for growers of high-value crops who need reliable, long-term drip irrigation performance.
